Long Reef headland contains Warringah's only example of native grassland vegetation occurring on clay soils.
The Long Reef headland was covered with the weed, Bitou bush – a native of South America.

This area is a critical habitat for around 134 bird species, especially for the visiting Migratory Shorebirds.
